Israel

PACKING. LET’S GET PRACTICAL.

Are you wondering what to pack for your trip to Israel? Here is an essential packing checklist that addresses dress code issues, weather, and other important logistics – and will make sure you have everything you need: from clothes and deodorant to chargers and cameras.

Hand Luggage
  • Please clearly mark each piece of your luggage with your full name and phone number.
  • Passport/visa
  • Photocopy of your passport information page
  • Credit cards/cash
  • Health & travel insurance documents
  • Prescription medications (and any medications you will need while traveling, including Tylenol/Aspirin)
  • Snacks
  • Mobile device/charger/camera
  • One change of clothing
  • Books and magazines
  • Reading glasses/sunglasses
  • Hand sanitizer/wet wipes/tissues
  • Any liquids should be in containers no larger than 100 ml (3.4 ounces) and placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag (up to 20 x 20 cm)
  • No tweezers or sharp instruments
TRAVEL WARDROBE
  • If you're visiting Israel any time from April to October, you can pack for hot weather: tank tops, short sleeves shorts, swimsuits. During the winter months, there are generally cooler temperatures, along with clouds and rain, so it's a good idea to pack layers, especially since mountainous regions in the country are colder. In the spring it's advisable to bring summer clothes with light sweaters/layers for the cooler evenings. As for shoes, make sure to pack shoes that are suitable for hiking as well as walking shoes (both comfortable and formal). And of course, sandals and flip flops.
  • Lightweight, layerable, versatile clothes in non-wrinkle fabrics
  • Light tops (short or long sleeve)
  • Tank tops/undershirts
  • Short sleeve polo shirts and t-shirts
  • Sweater/cardigan/light jacket
  • Jeans/khakis
  • Sweatpants
  • Gym clothes & sneakers
  • 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes and 1 pair of more formal shoes
  • Clothes for Shabbat
  • Pajamas
  • Swimsuit
  • Sun hat
  • Flip flops or sandals
Toiletry Bag Basics
  • While it's true that you can find a broad selection of toiletries in most pharmacies in Israel, it's always a good idea to come prepared with your familiar toiletry basics. You may not be able to find the toiletries that you use regularly and when it comes to hygiene, you don't want to take any chances.*
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste/floss
  • Hair products including brush/comb
  • Deodorant & personal hygiene items
  • Shampoo/conditioner
  • Moisturizer/makeup
  • Contact lenses/solution/contact lens case/glasses
  • Shaving kit
  • Cologne/perfume
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • If you plan to bring hair dryers/straighteners, make sure to have the appropriate electrical converter
Miscellaneous
  • Small backpack for day touring
  • Folding bag or small duffel bag
  • Travel journal and pen
  • Sewing & clothing care kit/stain remover
Electronic Devices and Accessories
  • The electric current in Israel is 220 volts AC, single phase, 50 Hertz. Most hotels provide hairdryers and virtually all hotel rooms have 110/220 volts electric shaver sockets. Electric shavers, traveling irons, phone rechargers, and other small appliances may require adaptors and/or converters, which you can purchase prior to your departure or at the airport. What NOT to Pack
  • In addition to the items you can't bring aboard the plane, the following items should not be brought to Israel:*
  • Chemicals, Haz and non-Haz
  • Collectible coins
  • Drugs, non-prescription
  • Fabrics & fabric samples
  • Medical/dental supplies, samples, & equipment.
  • Food weighting more than 3 kg per product or spices that exceed 100g or one bag of each spice with a combined weight of 3kg.

*MODEST CLOTHING*
Israel has a high concentration of holy sites, from modern-day churches and mosques to synagogues and ancient places of worship. Some areas also contain a large population of religious citizens with their own customs and traditions. When on a Jewish trip visiting holy sites or predominately religious areas, it’s important to keep the local way of life in mind to avoid offending anyone.

As a guideline for modest clothing, men are expected to wear long pants, while women are advised to wear clothing that is at least knee length or below, such as long skirts or pants. Women should also refrain from wearing sleeveless shirts or shirts with low necklines. In many places of worship, for example, women are also required to cover their shoulders, so it’s a good idea to carry a lightweight scarf or shawl just in case.
