Inside out.
Jewish Uzbekistan.

The Jews in Uzbekistan were affiliated with two communities: the ancient one, the Jews of Bukhara, who speak a Tajiki-Jewish dialect, and the new one, of eastern European origin. World War II converted Uzbekistan into an important Jewish center, and the Jews of Western and Central European U.S.S.R. found refuge there. The 1970 Soviet census showed 103,000 Jews in Uzbekistan, however thousands of Jews emigrated because of antisemitic policies under the Soviet Union, and still more due to Uzbekistan’s bleak economic prospects after its independence in 1991, leaving behind a very small and fragile Jewish community. The emigre community is far larger than its wellspring, with more than 50,000 Bukharian Jews in New York and more than 100,000 in Israel.
