Croatia is an idyllic haven on the glittering Adriatic coast, known for its quaint and charming cobblestone towns, exceptional food and wine, and heavenly turquoise waters. The country has come a long way since the early 1990s, when within the space of half a decade – almost uniquely in contemporary Europe – it experienced the collapse of communism, a war of national survival, and the securing of independence.
INSIDE OUT. JEWISH CROATIA.
Jewish communities were already present in the Balkans when the Croats established a kingdom there in the 10th century CE. However, the Jews of Croatia only received full emancipation in 1873. By the eve of World War I, there were 40 Jewish communities in the country and 24,000 Jews. Croatia’s pro-Nazi government collaborated with Nazi Germany and resulted in the deportation and extermination of thousands of Croatian Jews. There are about 2,000 Jews and ten Jewish communities left in Croatia today.
