From medieval times to today, the history of the Jews in Vienna is a tale of both triumph and tragedy. By the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, Vienna boasted one of the most prominent centers of Jewish culture in Europe and was during different times the home to some of the greatest Jewish thinkers such as Theodor Herzl, Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka, and Viktor Frankl. The Jews’ successful emancipation, however, was short-lived with the rise of Nazism in 1933. By the end of the Holocaust, the Jewish community had been whittled down to less than 4,000, Jewish culture and society have gradually been recovering and Austria is experiencing a rebirth of Judaism.
